The 33rd IAJE Annual Conference in
New York City offered a
record number of concerts, seminars and exhibits and showcased some
extraordinary talent. Education, teacher training and outreach remained
at the heart of the conference agenda, providing an excellent chance for
professional development and renewal.
Concert stages spotlighted traditional
jazz, world jazz and vocal jazz performed by
professional artists and
students. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band, which can be heard on NPR,
performed Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton favorites.
The WDR Big Band, from Köln Germany, featured special guest and
gypsy guitarist Biréli Lagrénč A second performance with special guest
and NEA Jazz Master Paquito D'Rivera was roadcast live on German
Public radio on Saturday. Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette,
and Eddie Gomez performed for the first time together as a trio
to a standing-room-only crowd. Vocal jazz fans were treated to
performances by vocalists Kitty Margolis and Karrin Allyson.
School groups such as the Univeristy of
North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band, Western Michigan University's
Gold Company, the New World School of the Arts High School Jazz
Ensemble from Miami, Fla., the Thelma Yellin High School of the
Arts vocal group Red Square, from Givatayim, Israel, the
Bellevue Community College Monday Night Band from Bellevue, Wash.,
the Marryatville High School Big Band from Adelaide, SA
Australia, were among many school groups performing during the
conference.
Additionally, student all-star groups and
student jazz competition winners from around the world were showcased
including The Sisters In Jazz, The Clifford Brown/Stan Getz
Fellowship All-Stars, The Community College All-Star Band,
the Historically Black Colleges and Universities All-star band,
as well as Montreux Competition winners all performed during the
conference.
